5.0 out of 5 stars Lush, vivid cinematography

I first heard mention of this film a year and a half ago, in a "preview" blurb in some magazine in a waiting room. Suffice to say I was thrilled to finally get my copy. I was expecting something along the lines of Step Into Liquid, so it took me about 20 minutes to really get into it. If you're a fan of Baraka, or any of the Qatsi films, you'll probably enjoy this film, but the lack of narration, commentary, or dialogue might put some viewers off. If you can look past that, though, it becomes a photo-documentary (to music) about our relationship with nature and with each other. I can't say I fell in love with the soundtrack right away, but nevertheless it warrants a solid 5-star rating. Despite all odds the directors succeed brilliantly, conveying beauty, the human connection, and even humor, and everything I felt was "missing" could be found in the Bonus features (director commentary, behind the scenes, etc).

Point of interest: The segment in Cuba is particularly demonstrative of the perfect juxtaposition of music and imagery.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sipping Heaven

"Sipping Jetstreams" embodies the fantasy of every surfer - the surf trip.

With stunningly beautiful cinematography, the film chronicles pro surfers in line-ups across the world, as well as the people who inhabit each specific part of the globe. Much of the non-surfing footage is of subject matter usually captured in photos - sunsets and sunrises, locals sitting and smiling, flowers blooming, and the like - but instead of feeling that Taylor Steele missed the entire point of video, I found myself in love with each of the places the surfers travel. In a surprising twist on the typical surf film - which usually has at least some monologues by surfers, talking about the line-up or psyche - "SJ" is completely dialog free save for an introduction about the appeal of travel. That being said, the movie plays almost like a 36-minute long music video, featuring some of the best music and footage synchronization that I've ever seen in a surf movie - or music video, for that matter.

However, those looking for a more straightforward surf video (a la "Billabong - Frothing" or "Absolute Mexico", etc.) will be disappointed, since the film is by my estimates half surf footage, half about the locals. If I had one serious beef with the film (and this is nitpicking, at best), it's that some of the waves that are surfed are marginal at best: Egypt, and part of the Japan trip. It was almost as if they had filmed there just for the scenery shots, then said "well, we're here, get in the water!"

My favorite part? In a surreal sequence, a blonde shaggy-haired skateboarder (he's probably famous) manuals down a Cuban street as 1960s-era Cuban cars drive past, set to the Buena Vista Social Club. I found myself fascinated by the contradictions, and somewhat alarmed as he kept skating and clearly startled several Cuban drivers coming around corners (do they not dislike us enough already?!) But in a nice shot later on, we see the same skater watching as kids shred with his board, and later him laughing with two Cuban kids on some steps. (The Jamaican sessions were also good, too - I like a little reggae with my surf.)

Without a doubt, this is a film I will be watching over again - just not as much for the surf, as for the surf escapism.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully filmed

This is a gorgeous film to watch. The DVD comes with a book of photographs and the packaging is very high quality. The scenery and travel shots in this movie are worthy of hanging on a wall. The surfing locations are more exotic than the norm, which is a nice change - and the music is also paired well and in fact, I hope they release a cd as I'd purchase it. It really is a unique surfing film from the many others I've seen. However, the one big disappointment was there's no narrative, and I personally would've liked to know where they were during each session, what beaches, who was surfing etc, along with the usual entertaining travel tales expected from such a journey. There is a DVD option for "director's commentary" that gives some background - but interviews with the surfers and more on the why/what/where/when/how and especially, how interacting with locals, was something I really wanted to know more about to. (and i know this is a surf film first, but I think those extras would've really enhanced this film) Still, it's worth watching and makes a really nice gift to any surfing enthusiast - and anyone who enjoys travel photography.

The True Story of a Surfing Revolution

Director/Writer/Producer Josh Landan works with Producer/Writer/Editor Scott Stankey to craft one of the most revealing and compelling surfing stories ever told, offering a feature documentary delivered in a truly unique cinematic style. FLOW is narrated by Brandon Boyd (Incubus) with music from the bands Incubus, Bloc Party, Sparta, Pinback, and many others including original music and score by Michael Einziger, Tim Curran, and Todd Hannigan. FLOW chronicles the last 31 years of surfing through a unique, insider's perspective as to the dedication, devotion, and individual passion that has revolutionized modern surfing and its mostly misinterpreted lifestyle. The story focuses on Channel Islands Surfboards founder and world-renowned surfboard craftsman Al Merrick and his special relationships with the team of world champion Channel Islands Team riders and arguably the two best and most influential surfers ever: Kelly Slater (7 time world champion) and Tom Curren (3 time world champion). The film highlights Al's visionary approach that cultivated the Channel Islands Team rider's talent into 19 world titles, bringing you back to the early 60's with the evolution of the shortboard and takes you on a journey up to present day. We relive those profound years that experienced a revolutionary leap forward in surfing design, performance, and image, and weave through to the present where you experience first hand what it takes to be a part of the most progressive surfing team in the world. FLOW reveals the core, revolutionary changes that resulted in a worldwide recognition of modern surfing. It is not just a surf film with beautiful imagery and a loose story structure, but rather a heart-felt, soulful perspective on one man's influence on a bevy of talented individuals. This film will not only illustrate the revolution of modern surfing, but it will inspire people that are completely distanced from the sport.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a surf movie

This is an inspiring movie. I usually start to get tired of just listening to surf lingo and watching waves on the typical surf movie. This is really the story of a legend who is an unassuming individual who not only has helped shaped the face of surfing, but nutured and developed what is arguably one of the most awesome stable of team surfers ever. What is most impressive is the love and interest he has in these guys as people , not just talents. His love and dedication to the sport is what is inspiring. I highly recommend this movie. In addition, the soundtrack is awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST SURF DOCUMENTARY OF OUR TIME

FLOW: THE TRUE STORY OF A SURFING REVOLUTION documents the rise of some of the greatest names in the history of modern day surfing. It is at once a film that briefly follows the evolution of modern day surfing and the transition to shortboarding. You learn about how Al Merrick began shaping and the design breakthroughs that took place between him and the surfers that he shaped for that would change the sport forever. There are several mini biographies on Channel Islands riders including Tom Curren Kelly Slater, Taylor Knox, Bobby Martinez, Dane Reynolds. The soundtrack to this film is incredible, it enhances the film and takes it to another level. Brandon Boyd's narration is first class supplemented by interviews from some of the greatest names in the sport. The film is an hour and a half long, and after I saw it for the first time, I couldn't believe how powerful it was. Flow radiates on an emotional and spiritual level, it brings you beyond the action in the water and into the hearts and minds of some of the greatest surfers of our time. The DVD is packed with Bonus features and a subscription to Transworld Surf.

Awesome suit for a great price. Comfortable and fits great. I ordered an XL and have a 42in chest, 35in waist, and am 5' 11" tall. Nice and warm in 75 degree water. Would use for surfing as well because it's pretty flexible and easy to get on and off. Delivery took only 3 days.

For less then $90 this is a great buy. I purchased the medium large and it fit my 5' 9" average frame and fat belly good. I was a little out of the weight range but it still fits even if a little snug in the belly. I just got back from scuba diving in Key Largo with 70 F water and I was very comfortable. Of course I tend to be warmer then others.

Deadliest Catch - Season 1 (5 Disc Set) (2005)

Welcome to one of the world's deadliest jobs: the Alaskan crab fisherman. Deep in the frigid waters of the Bering Sea lurk the highly lucrative, yet often elusive, king and snow crabs. Now the hair-raising reality adventure comes to DVD in this thrilling 5-DVD set containing all 10 episodes: "Greenhorns," "Long Sleepless Nights," "Lady Luck," "Beat the Clock," "Dead of Winter," "Man Overboard," "High Hopes," "Good Fishing," "The Clock's Ticking," and "The Final Run."

5.0 out of 5 stars Check it Out

As someone who worked in the Alaska commerical fisheries for years, and on crab boats in the Bering Sea out of Dutch Harbor during the early 90s, I really appreciate this series which has given this worthy, but dangerous, occupation the notoriety it deserves. This was the hardest, most dangerous work I ever did, inclusive of my period of military service, in which several of my friends lost their lives; it is an occupation that all who have participated in can have great pride in. One point needs to be made, however, which is that conditions are a little safer than they were before with the advent of the quota system which lets boats choose their weather some (although I think the TV producers may be goading fishers to push the limit more than they otherwise would). Previously it was a free for fall that started on January 15th. A good book to read in conjunction with viewing this series is Spike Walker's "Working on the Edge."

By Quilmiense (USA/Spain)
5.0 out of 5 stars Man and the sea

Those of us who have had family members work on the seas will appreciate this real life show better than others. It is not just the excitement of the risks involved, the dangerous weather conditions, or the roughness of the jobs you see on deck, it's much more. You get to watch real people whose worries and hopes you identify with, and you get to love them by learning to respect them in their sacrifices. In Spain there's a vast retired population that watches others work at construction sites and admires how things get done without their help. This maybe a type of voyeurism, but is something like what I felt while watching this series, without the loss of sleep or the sea-sickness. It is awe-inspiring and humbling to watch these men put their lives on the line for the sakes of their families and loved ones.

There is the added interest of a competition taking place among many ships to see who gets the biggest share, a race against time and the natural elements, a psychological study of leadership and gregariousness, and finally it is an ode to the sea, its beauty and ruthless power, with stories of lost lives, sunk ships, faith and superstitions, love and friendship, hardship and memories. The few chapters I saw on tv were captivating, but now that I saw them on dvd I realized there is much more, there are stories of people, and you want to see how they will make it in the next chapter, what choices -if good or bad- they will make. The cynic may think it's just all about money (so the thief thinks everybody is like him) and that these people are not different from anybody else. The gambler doesn't risk his life, he risks his family wealth. These men risk their lives for the welfare of their families.

One cannot but respect every single one of these men. May God bless them, and may their faith grow as their works, for: "Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe and tremble!" (James 2:17-19) How sad it would be to have toiled so much and lose it all for the lack of faith in Jesus Christ as Savior, and even more being fishermen.

After about twenty years since getting my first tackle box when I was a kid, I decided it was time for an upgrade. After looking around, I settled on the Plano 1363. The decision all came down to versatility.
I do a lot of different freshwater fishing (bass, walleye, panfish, etc.) and a lot of the other Plano tackle boxes out there seemed to have room for my small lures or my big lures, but not both. The 1363, with two larger and one smaller removable drawer, allows me to store all of my fishing stuff in an organized manner.
The only improvement I made to the box was add a small storage box to the top compartment. I keep my ice fishing tackle in the small box to avoid hauling the whole thing around when all I need is a few things.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet

One might think that there would be a spectrum of introductory fishing books running from lengthy books dense with information to shorter books with less information but still reasonably useful. I have not found that to be the case until now. This is a short and sweet introduction to fishing that still somehow manages to be well rounded. The book covers, probably as painlessly as is possible, almost all the topics one needs to know something about in order to experience some fun and success as a fisherman. I think that says a lot for the book.

The tone of the book is what one might describe as jovial, but I was not laughing at any time while reading this book. Many fishing books have a special area where they excel; for this book, it is the topic of fishing vests. I appreciated that because often it is the small logistical matters that don't get discussed in fishing

You wouldn't think a movie that uses the game of golf as a metaphor for class struggle could be so entertaining. The Greatest Game Ever Played stars the charming Shia LaBeouf (Holes) as Francis Ouimet, a golfer who, in 1913, rose from caddy to U.S. Open champion at the age of 20--despite the resistance of the powers that be, who thought it unseemly for a lower-class plebian to play the sport of gentlemen. Ouimet's main competitor is Harry Vardon (Stephen Dillane, The Hours), a British professional, still considered one of the greatest players of all time, who fought his own class battles. The two go head to head in a genuinely gripping match, deftly balanced against the juxtapositions of their personal struggles. Is it sentimental and formulaic? Is the outcome a foregone conclusion? Yes, but it doesn't matter--formulas exist because, when executed with verve and dexterity, they work. Bill Paxton, best known as an actor (One False Move, Apollo 13), steps into the director's chair and hits all the right notes, aided by an excellent cast playing colorful characters, a vivid recreation of the time period, glowing cinematography, and an expert pace. The Greatest Game Ever Played works. --Bret Fetzer

We watched this movie in the theaters with the whole family, including two kids under 10. I'm not a golfer, but my husband loves the sport. The movie has great story line, funny moments, a bit of romance and some thrilling episodes. It would make for a nice evening of quality family time.

Please note that the DVD is in widescreen format. That's the only reason I'm not buying it at this time, I'm hoping for a full screen version.

4.0 out of 5 stars A stirring slice of golf history, well-rendered on film, October 1, 2005
By chefdevergue (Spokane, WA United States)

One doesn't have to have read Mark Frost's book (he adapted his book for the screenplay) to enjoy this movie. Obviously, the book contains much more detail regarding the personal histories of Harry Vardon, Francis Ouimet, JJ McDermott & others leading up to (and following) the 1913 US Open, and there was no way that Frost could have included all of the minute detail without at least doubling the length of the movie. One also misses the discussion of the technology available to the turn-of-the-century golfer, as well as some of the geo-political forces that led to Vardon & Ted Ray making their tour of the United States.

However, what one does get is a beautifully filmed story that has the predictable feel-good nature one would expect from a Disney film, without being sappy. The principals bear a striking resemblance to the historical figures (right down to Eddie the caddie), and the historical match is accurately rendered. While one doesn't get the book's stroke by stroke narrative, one does get to enjoy the energy of the galleries as well as the immense pressures bearing down on the tournament leaders.

I only have a couple of significant complaints about the movie. One is with the wholy fictional relationship (concocted for the purposes of this film) between Francis Ouimet and the upper class young lady. It smacks uncomfortably of Jack-Rose relationship in Titanic, and when the movie focuses on this relationship, it skates dangerously close to outright corniness. Fortunately, once the tournament begins, this subplot is thankfully relegated to the background. By & large it interferes only minimally with the story.

My other beef is with the fact that Harry Vardon comes off as a far too one-dimensional character, as he as portrayed as an ambitious, single-minded, golfing machine, very nearly bereft of passion or emotion. Frost's book provides far more depth to Vardon than one will find here. One would not know from the movie that his American tour came not long after his recovery from a bout with tuberculosis (first striking in 1903, after his 4th British Open) which not only derailed his career (and almost ended it) for several years, but came close to killing him. If the audience could more fully appreciate all of the tremendous obstacles Vardon had overcome, they might be more sympathetic towards him. While not cast as a villain, Vardon's role in this film definitely is that of Ouimet's nemesis more than anything else, which strikes me as unfair.

The one other thing which strikes as unfair is the fact that the audience really has no idea just how tremendously talented these men were. Frost's book devotes considerable space to the equipment of the time, which was downright primative compared to the clubs and balls today's players use. I can only imagine the kinds of scores Vardon & Ouimet might post with today's equipment. However, audiences who don't understand the nature of golf technology in 1913 may only see shots that can be seen a hundred times or more on any PGA tour event on any given weekend, and they may not appreciate the true greatness of these earlier players. Having made this complaint, I have to admit that I don't know how the film could improve in this area. I would suggest that you read the book.

However, this is a movie that one can enjoy without having any knowledge of golf in general or the 1913 US Open in particular. Unlike so many films that claim to be "based on" or "inspired by" true events (but in fact have almost no resemblance to historical events), what you see in this film by & large is what actually happened. Most people should find this to be enjoyable.

If you love golf, you'll love this movie. Even if you don't love golf, you'll enjoy it. The cinematography is phenomenal. The makers of this movie used a specially designed camera in many scenes to follow the ball from shot to stop. One of my favorite shots was Ted Ray's blast through the woods, between the trees, and onto the green with the camera following the ball all the way! As others have said, it's the best golf movie yet, largely because the camera work and film editing added much to the magic of this true come-from-behind story. I also think the close working relationship between director Bill Paxton and the author of the book, The Greatest Game Ever Played, Mark Frost, added to the movie's charm and authenticity.

Francis Ouimet and Harry Vardon had something in common. They were `common', according to the societal standards of their respective times. One is American, the other English, born a generation apart. Vardon grew up to become a world-renowned golfer, but could never join "the club" in his own homeland because he came from the underclass. However, he did become a hero to growing boys in Europe and America, including young Francis Ouimet, who grew up across the street from the Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. Francis began caddying at a tender age, and there were those who saw something special in him. These gentlemen, and Ouimet's mother (at least in the movie), encouraged him to take his love of golf from the caddie stage to the player's arena. With the odds against him from several directions, he played his way into the hearts and minds of his American countrymen and the world, and into the record books, by playing as an amateur in the 1913 U.S. Open and winning.

Shia LaBoeuf (Holes) is perfect as Ouimet, and Stephen Dillane portrays the stoic, haunted Vardon. The movie overall was well-cast, and Josh Flitter, who plays Eddie Lowery, almost stole the show!! It's a good bet you'll be mesmerized by this wonderful film. Just remember, in the immortal words of 10-year-old Eddie, when holding onto that golf club "Easy squeezy, lemon freezy!"

Tiger Woods 08 is an excellent game for the Wii system. Using the remote as your golf club immerses you in the game. Even in the easy mode you have to pay attention to the lie, the wind, your club selection and your swing to be successful.

Creating your player is wonderful with an almost infinite amount of customization. As you play you earn money and can buy equipment: everything from clothing and jewelry to shafts and club heads. Very nice.

Tons of courses to choose from and lots of arcade and minigames to play means you'll never get bored with this game. It's also terrific with one player or four players.

I'm blown away that some people complain about the graphics: I love the graphics especially since the Wii is not a next gen, over-priced system. It is FUN and isn't that what you want from a system?

Tiger Woods '08 is a real winner. Video gaming doesn't get any better than this.

When I got my Wii, I eagerly awaited the release of TW07--it was good--using the wiimote as a club worked quite well, but the controls seemed a bit twitchy, both in menus and also rarely when swinging the 'club'.

TW08 is really what 07 should have been--yes the graphics are less than stellar, but they are significantly better than 07. The wiimote as golf club more than makes up for any missing graphical bliss--even my non-golfing friends that have seen this thought it would be fun. 08 also dropped the fantasy courses from 07 and added some more real courses--the missing fantasy ones are not a great loss to me, they were generally ridiculously difficult and a major obstacle for me completing the PGA tour portion of the game. I enjoy this game so much I'm thinking about taking up real golf again after 10 years of being away from the game--if only I could play as well as I do with the Wii......

For the record, I am very new to this generation of video games. The last system I owned was a mid-90s SuperNES, but something about this new interactive element of the Wii interested me, especially the possibility of using real golfing motions to play TW08. So, even though I love the game, understand that I have no point of reference (this has been my only purchase) and can't really describe how it compares to other games.

What strikes me most about Tiger Woods 08 is the massive ambition to the "career" mode. Players start out as amateurs and must win a set amount of events and maintain a certain average score to even earn a PGA tour card. After that, players then have to do the same thing their first year on the tour to qualify for the majors. It's designed to replicate a golfer's career and really has no "end". At the end of each calendar year on the game, a next season begins, allowing the player to play the events again. I've had the game for two weeks and am just now earning my tour card (I average playing about an hour per day). Some of the goals set for my player include "winning every event" and "beating the record of 18 career majors". At the rate I play, I don't think it will be possible to complete all of my tasks in less than six months. I can remember buying NES and SNES games and beating them in one weekend, so a game like this really provides more enjoyment for your dollar.

Even if a person does everything that can be done on the career mode (which will take a long time), the game still provides an opportunity to play other players head to head in one-on-one match-ups. You can use regular or Stableford scoring, play match/skins games or play my favorite game, one-ball.

I've read a lot about flaws in the game and difficulty with shots, but I don't think it is a problem with the game. I have experienced the "quick shot" many talk about, where I hit the ball during what should be my backswing at only a fraction of the power, but each time I have done that, I have been in a hurry, changing clubs or position just before starting my swing. It's never happened when I have taken my time and played the shot properly. The game's biggest flaw is the ease at which you can get out of trouble. Rough and bunker landings don't ruin holes the way they should. The only difference between landing 130 yards away from the stick in the fairway and 130 yards away from the stick in the rough is the size of the club you need. Placing and spinning the ball is about the same from either. I routinely birdie and sometimes eagle holes when I have been in the rough and sand.

The quality of the clubs seems good and the bag is just what we expected, but they are much too large for a younger child. My son, almost 4, is as tall as the driver. He is so disappointed as he will have to wait several years until this set will work for him. It is our own fault as the club dimensions are in the description, but just wanted to warn others that this set is for much taller children.

These clubs are fantastic. They say they're for age 4-8 but I'd say 5-8 as they are a little big for my 4.5 year old who is in the 95% percentile for height. The clubs are made of graphite and the driver is titanium so they are really light. I bought a Texan driver from the Golf Outlet of America on here and it was 15 bucks with 12 bucks s/h. It was an excellent driver to mess around on the driving range (my dad retired at the end of a range so I had too!) So I had confidence in getting the set for my son who showed an interest in playing at Papa's. Needless to say, very good quality, the bag is very nice thats included, and all for 50 bucks. Note that the bag has a double stand, very handy, and back pack padded straps too! Such a deal... oh, and the driver has a cover and so does the bag (with snaps and zipper) 5 clubs in all (3 driver, putter, 5,7,9).

Unbelievable bang for your buck! I bought these clubs for my 4-yr old to introduce him to golf and he loves them. I was AMAZED at the high quality clubs and bag. The bag has the nice backpack style straps that the "big boys" wear and a nice auto-stand that it sets up on. The clubs are better made than mine!! I am going to order 2 more sets for his cousins. I highly recommend these clubs for a young child.

I really like this set and they are very cute! I started with clubs with a metal shaft and I noticed a big difference with these right off the bat. They are so much lighter and my ball goes a lot further. I am still getting used to the hybrid but I can already tell that it will soon be my favorite club.

I would recommend these clubs, and they were a great deal!

By D. Clark

My wife is just starting to play and this is a great first set for an adult. It comes with a bag, and that is nice (a min of $50 just for a bag bought sep). I would certainly recommend it.

By Coe C. Hawkins "hawkfam" (Davis, ca)

My wife enjoyed using the clubs-great color for a fashion concious person. Good selection of clubs-the bag itself is worrth the cost. The shaft is not a stiff one and most likely have to be replaced after the golfer becomes more serious.
